Choosing a Computer for a Purpose

Prioritise specifications according to workload instead of choosing the largest number in every category.

Computer configurations suited to study, programming, data, AI, video and server workloads
Figure 23. Different workloads require different balances of processor, memory, storage, graphics and reliability.

Decision process

  1. Define the principal workload and software requirements.
  2. Identify the likely bottleneck: CPU, RAM, storage, GPU, network or display.
  3. Set a realistic budget and consider future upgrades.
  4. Evaluate portability, energy, warranty and repairability.
  5. Justify the final choice using evidence rather than marketing labels.

Mini challenge: Recommend a computer for a first-year data engineering student and explain three priorities and one acceptable compromise.
