Data Centre Hardware

Identify the physical infrastructure required to deliver reliable digital and AI services.

01Introduction to Computer and System
Advanced infrastructure

Look beyond the server

A data centre also depends on networking, storage, power, cooling, monitoring, fire protection and physical security.

Data-centre components

ComponentPurpose
Rack serverProvides CPU, memory and local storage in a standard enclosure.
GPU serverAccelerates AI, analytics and simulation workloads.
Storage systemRetains datasets, applications, backups and model artefacts.
Network switchConnects servers, racks and external networks.
UPS and PDUProtects and distributes electrical power.
Cooling systemRemoves heat and maintains safe operating conditions.
Monitoring sensorsTrack temperature, power, airflow, faults and access.

Reliability principles

  • Remove single points of failure where the service requires continuous availability.
  • Monitor temperature, power, capacity and hardware health.
  • Separate production traffic, management traffic and storage traffic where appropriate.
  • Plan maintenance, replacement and secure disposal across the hardware lifecycle.
